Students Prep for AP Exams

The Advanced Placement tests are well under way at MCHS, leaving students stressed and studying hard. Advanced Placement, or AP courses are a product of the college board, that are rigorous classes in a variety of subjects which offer a respective AP exam worth college credit if successfully completed. Here at Mason City High School, AP follows along the Honors Program, replacing the regular class of that grade and offering up to 3 college credits depending on the AP exam. AP exams are scored on a 1 to 5 scale, with a 5 being the highest possible with full credits, and a 1 resulting in failure. The AP exam itself is not required in order to take the course, but it is strongly encouraged. Each test costs only $92, and each exam potentially earns several college credits, saving much more money in the long term. MCHS offers seven different AP classes. Sixty six students participate in the AP program at MCHS, meaning many students will be take multiple exams.

Each AP exam has a different nationwide date, with some already being completed, and others yet to come. The Chemistry exam was May 1st, The Physics exam was May 2nd, the English Literature and Composition exam was May 3rd, The United States Government and Politics exam was Thursday, May 4th. The Calculus AB exam will be May 9, the Macroeconomics exam will be May 10th, and finally, the Human Geography exam will be May 12th. According to AP student Mia Godfrey, “The test and course as a whole was incredibly stressful, but things like Saturday morning study sessions made if fun.” No matter how stressful it might be, the AP program is a great way for students to get a head start on their future, and hopefully leave them prepared and excited to take on the world as a college student.
