MCHS Hockey Takes Second at State

With a second-place state finish under their belts, the Mohawk Hockey Club has much to be proud of. The team went to the Midwest High School Hockey League with 14 seniors leading them. They were very successful and made it to the final against Sioux City on Sunday, March 4. Although they struggled during the first half of the match, they came back fighting in the second portion of the game, with goals from senior Zach Jimenez and junior Isaac Donahoo. Despite their best efforts, they ended up with a loss to Sioux City, 4-2. Although the whole team was disappointed, they also were proud of how far they came.

Isaac Donahoo is a junior at Mason City High School and has played with most of the seniors most of his hockey career, which started at the age of 3. He has a very tight bond with the seniors and even said that he would not just call them friends anymore, they are like his brothers. The whole team seemed to have a tight bond, and that was important when training for state. Isaac mentioned that both a lot of team and individual work was put in. He mentioned his coaches in this process as well, “Coach helped a lot. He prepared his practices for us to not only improve as a team but to improve as individuals too.”

Isaac did a lot of work by himself too. He mentioned that during his free time before games, he would study hockey videos and apply what he saw in game situations, and he did a lot of training in the off-season as well. This training is important. If he had any advice for incoming freshman on what it takes to be successful, it would be to train in the off-season. According to Isaac, high school hockey is a completely different ice rink than anything they have played before.

Even with a loss at state, the Mohawk Hockey Club team concludes a historic season, not likely to be forgotten any time soon.
