Girls’ Basketball Aims High

The Mason City Girls’ Basketball team has a lot to be proud of. The team continues to find success on the court despite their challenging schedule of conference and non-conference games with some of the best teams in the state. Coach Curt Klaahsen takes a lot of pride in what his players are doing. He says that they are “a very hard-working group who excel in the classroom and on the court.” With that, he believes that a player should have a hard-working mindset and a great attitude, as well as being able to have fun with what they are doing. Coach Klaahsen says, “You are either getting better or you or getting worse…we are not staying the same. If we don’t work at something, we will get worse.”

One player who has clearly been putting in the work to get better is Megan Meyer, junior captain on the varsity team. Megan has had an outstanding season so far. She scored over 40 points in the game against Fort Dodge. In that same week, she was the sixth girl in MCHS history to score 1,000 points in her career, which she accomplished during the Dowling Catholic game.

Although she feels good and was happy about her accomplishments, she also had good things to say about the team and the program itself. She mentioned how she enjoyed just being on a team with girls she likes to spend time with. Also, she had very good things to say about coach Curt Klaahsen, “Coach Klaahsen is great, and he cares a lot about the girls.” Megan is committed to Iowa for basketball once she graduates from Mason City, and with good reason. Whether individually or as a team, it is clear Mason City Girls’ Basketball is destined for success this season. The girls’ next home game is on January 23 against Ankeny Centennial. Come out and support the Mohawks!
