Boys’ Track and Field Kicks Off

By

Boys track and field season kicked off this spring, and head coach, Jed Vorba has a lot to share about the season.

Vorba has been coaching track for 35 years, with 31 of those years as head coach and 20 of those as Mason City’s head coach.

Vorba’a favorite part of coaching the boys would be the interaction with the top student athletes and improving sports at MCHS. Vorba adds to this, saying, “it is easy to see the correlation between young men who want to get stronger, faster and improve flexibility and success in other sports at Mason City.”

Seniors this year are Thomas Rowe, Weston Schultz, Mac Skogen, Brady Tilkes, Dylan Voves, Trey Wiegmann, Kyle Younker and Josh Burton. Schultz, Younker, Voves, and Rowe are returning state qualifiers.

Assistant coaches are John Lee, Tyler Ketelesen, David Durbala, and Aaron Hardcastle.

Vorba’s advice to athletes is to be a multi sport athlete. He speaks of how sports are all about multi participation for a well rounded athlete. “We at Mason City can not survive if we are not sharing our athletes!”

This is the smallest group of track boys in Vorba’s experience. Coaches have been seeing less and less participants in Mason City activities. The season is filled with hope, to prepare the young men for baseball, basketball, cross country, wrestling, and football.

Best of luck to the track and field boys this season!
