Winter Games Begin

Every four years, the whole world goes wild over the Winter Olympics, and 2018 happens to be one of those years. This year’s Winter Olympics will be hosted in PyeongChang, South Korea. In total, there will be 15 sports being competed in by 2,952 athletes, coming from 92 different countries.

Even with how outstanding the lineup sounds, there has been plenty of controversy around this year’s games. Russia, for example, will not be having an official Olympic team this year because of prior doping scandals. While select Russian athletes are still allowed to compete, they must do so under a neutral flag and wearing neutral uniforms. The news that everyone has been buzzing about has been about North and South Korea. The countries have not had communication for two years. Suddenly, they have announced that they are going to march together at the opening ceremonies under one flag.

The 2018 PyeongChang Olympics will begin on Thursday, February 8th, and end on Sunday, February 25th. Some notable athletes competing will be Vincent Zhou, who is the youngest on Team USA at age 17, competing in figure skating. Shaun White, coming back for his fourth year in a row with two gold medals, will be competing in snowboarding. Another notable athlete is Shani Davis, a four-time medalist, competing in long track speed skating.

Although the games begin on Thursday, February 8th, the Opening Ceremonies are held on Friday. Live coverage of the Opening Ceremonies begins at 6:00 am, available through Live Streaming at NBCOlympics.com or the NBC Sports App. A recording of the Opening Ceremony will be shown at 7:00 pm central time on NBC. The US Olympic team will be led by Erin Hamlin, who competes in singles luge.

You can watch the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics on NBC, NBCSN, The NBC Sports App (available for Apple, Android, and most large streaming devices), Hulu, Sling, or even watch it in Virtual Reality on the NBC Sports VR App.
