Student Senate Elects New Officers

As the school year gets closer to its conclusion, Student Senate has more to do than just their fourth quarter activities. Recently, they voted on their new officer positions in preparation for next school year. There are five officer positions: Officer at Large, Sergeant at Arms, Secretary, Historian, Vice President, and President.

Morgan Wendel, a senior, is the retiring Officer at Large. The job of the Office at Large is to act as a liaison between Student Senate and the Mason City School Board. The elected Officer at Large is Hannah Brown, who is currently a junior and will be a senior for her year in office.

Marcus Buttweiler, a junior, is the retiring Sergeant at Arms. The Sergeant at Arms keeps track of member attendance. The purpose of keeping track of attendance is to ensure all members are participating and all events are successful. The elected Sergeant at Arms is Erika Sloan, who is a sophomore this year, and will be a junior next.

Senai Lewerke, a senior, is the Secretary of Student Senate this year. The Secretary’s job is to take minutes at every meeting and post them to Facebook for others to look over later. The race for secretary had to have a tiebreaker, as Daniel Stephenson and Myah Hanson had the same amount of votes in the first election. In the end, next year’s secretary will be Myah Hanson, a sophomore, who will be a junior next year.

Erika Sloan, a sophomore, is this year’s Historian. The Historian is responsible for the scrapbooks of things Student Senate did. Those scrapbooks are entered into State and Nationals for awards that Student Senate can earn. The next elected Historian is Mia Godfrey, who will be a senior next year.

Natalia Cadena, a senior, is currently the President of Student Senate, and Lauren Dettmer, also a senior, is the Vice President. The President’s job is to run all of the meetings and to keep meetings on track. While the Officer at Large is the face of Student Senate to the public, the President is the face of Student Senate to the Student body. They speak at assemblies and pep rallies and lead Student Senate organized events. The runner-up is the Vice President. Next year’s Vice President is Matt Smith, a senior next year. The President next year is Marcus Buttweiler, also a senior next year.

Student Senate has provided a great place for these students to learn leadership skills, and many students stepped up and ran for office. Great job to everyone who ran, and congratulations to the 2018-19 Student Senate Officers!
