Club Spotlight: Mohawk Movement

By

If you walk past Mrs. Cadena’s room on Tuesday mornings before school, you will hear and see a group of people mingling about, eating breakfast, talking, and waiting for their weekly lesson to begin. Mohawk Movement is a school group meant for the Christian students at the high school, as well as those curious about the Christian faith and anyone else who wants to come. This group focuses on the gospel of Jesus of Nazareth, and other aspects of the Christian faith.

Three of the five leaders answered some questions concerning Mohawk Movement and the part they play in it. Gwen Sewell, a freshman at MCHS said that one of the reasons she decided to lead and participate in Mohawk Movement was because she wanted to be able to “share Christ with people.” Another one of the leaders Emily Read, also a freshman, agreed with Gwen, saying that Mohawk Movement gives her the opportunity to reach out to people she wouldn’t normally interact with, teaching and congregating with them. Gabi Godfrey, once again a freshman leader brought up the point that she was able to impact people’s lives in a way that just wasn’t possible in any other school situation. The other two leaders are Matt Smith, a junior, and myself, Emma Garrett.

While the group is faith-based, it also provides an opportunity for students to connect, as well as providing outreach and community service. As teens living in today’s world, there is a lot going on, and it is helpful for students to have a support system of people their own age to share perspectives and feel safe. Mohawk Movement is one of those groups that is willing to do that. Aside from weekly meetings, the group also does outreach events in the High School and the community. During Iowa Assessments this past week, the group provided a free pancake breakfast before school to students and staff.

Mohawk Movement meets on Tuesdays at 8 am in Mrs. Cadena’s room. All are welcome! If you would like the Mohawk Press to feature your student group in an upcoming article, please contact Emily Bruns, Mohawk Press Advisor.
