Model UN Participates in Iowa Youth Symposium

The MCHS Model United Nations participants had a wonderful time this Wednesday at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines as part of the Iowa Youth Symposium. Model United Nations, or Model UN, is an educational simulation and/or academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Mason City High School sent seventeen participants.  Students were divided into several committees, including committees on politics, the economy, social, and science topics that were discussed and written about in a paper. The political committee wrote about free and fair elections, the economy committee wrote about intellectual properties, the social committee wrote about climate refugees, and the science committee wrote about endangered species in the United States. All papers were submitted at the end of the day.

In addition to their research and writing, two students, Noah McLaughlin and Randy Davenport, were named Overall Governor’s Day Outstanding Delegates at the Iowa Youth Symposium.  These two students summarized their committee’s resolutions in front of the entire Iowa Model United Nations association membership and advisory board in the Iowa House of Representatives. Congratulations to all students involved on a job well done!
