Homecoming Recap

Homecoming 2018, “Mohawks Just Wanna Have Fun”, was over a week full of 80’s themed activities for students, class competitions, and most importantly, school spirit. The student body had a great time participating in dress up days, games, decorating contests, and more.

Homecoming was kicked off on Friday, September 28th with Student Senate’s first ever drive-in movie. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was a hit with students. Student Senate projected the movie on a large screen in front of the parking lot, broadcasted audio to a radio station, and sold tickets that came with a popcorn and soda.

Each class had a specific Homecoming theme for their hallway and float decorations. Seniors had Indiana Jones, Juniors had Ghostbusters, Sophomores had Back to the Future, and Freshmen had Star Wars. On Saturday, students decorated their class hallways according to their theme, and on Sunday, they came back to decorate floats with the same theme.

With Monday, the dress up days began. Monday was “Material Girl Monday”, where students either dressed up, or dressed in the style of the 80’s. “Take On Me Tuesday” was next, and students dressed in completely black and white. On “Let’s Get Physical Wednesday”, MCHS was a sea of athletic wear and neon colors. Students showed class pride on “True Colors Thursday”, and dressed in the color coordinating with their class.

On the busy Homecoming Friday, students and staff were dressed all in their Mohawk gear. In the morning, Mohawks showed their sense of pride in their community by devoting their time to volunteer work. Students went all over town, doing anything from helping at schools, cleaning up parks, and even more. In the afternoon, at the pep assembly, faculty dressed up as iconic 80’s pop culture moments, and the Homecoming King Eddie Lara and Homecoming Queen Lucy Kim were crowned. After a parade down to Central Park, both students and community members enjoyed the community pep rally. Later that night, the student section was packed for the homecoming game, cheering for their peers on the field.

Finally, on Saturday after hours of getting ready, students walked through the 80’s themed hallway to the dance in the FEMA room. Karla Lara was the student DJ, and hyped up the crowd throughout the night. In the cafeteria, students could connect their phones and sing karaoke for a different crowd. Students were disappointed to have the Homecoming fun end, but by the end of the night, they were able to take off the high heels and ties, and relax after a long week. Congratulations to the Student Senate for planning and executing another amazing Homecoming week!
