Academic Decathlon Preps for Competitions

Wednesday, January 24th is the Academic Decathlon Competition Day. The purpose of the Academic Decathlon is to provide students the opportunity to excel academically through team competition. The Mason City High School team is coached by Mr. Eric Butikofer and consists of Abbigail Brosdahl, Nathan Elsbernd, JP Ryal, Maya Justice, Sierra Soto, Yahan Chang, Milo Dugan, Hugo Aldana, Jacob Graves, Spencer Wiebke, Elise Obermire, Tyler Jacobsen, and Caleb Lillquist.

The competition consists of a Super Quiz™, a speech, an interview, an essay, as well as several tests of knowledge. On the Super Quiz™, the group will take turns solving difficult multiple choice problems in front of a live audience. The speech consists of each individual presenting a prepared four-minute speech on any topic they’d like. In the interview, individuals will have seven minutes to answer several questions about themselves. Next, everyone will have fifty minutes to write their best essay possible on one of the United States Academic Decathlon topics. The event ends with several multiple choice exams in each of the decathlon topics. Everyone will also have the chance to win medals in each of the subjects and bring back hardware for MCHS. Best of luck to these outstanding students!
