Students Receive Recognition at Large Group Speech

Large Group Speech had it’s Statewide competition this past Saturday in Decorah, Iowa. Mason City High had four group events. In the Musical Theater Madi Judkins, Erin Foss, and Kailee Acker.

Group Improv had two groups, one of Caleb Lillquist, Jayden Smith, and Daniel Stephenson, and a second of Erin Foss, Maya Jalukar, and Courtney Smith. The last group was a Reader’s Theater, performed by Sarah Dodd, Maddi McChesney, Mia Godfrey, Marcus Buttweiler, Jayden Smith, and Caleb Lillquist.

The Musical Theater group performed ‘Not Getting Married Today’ from Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company. The Reader’s Theater, which is a 20-minute piece performed with scripts, did a satirical retelling of Romeo and Juliet from a play entitled ‘The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged)’. Each of the improvisation groups was given three prompts to choose from and two minutes to prepare. From those two minutes, they had to generate a 4-5 minute comedy performance.

Mason City received three overall 1 ratings, the highest score, and one 2 rating. At State, these ratings are determined as an average of three judges scores on a 1-4 rating scale. The Reader’s Theater was selected for a Non-Performing All State recognition, which means they were an All State worthy performance but didn’t make the number of performances allowed. The Individual season starts on February 24th in Clear Lake. Congratulations to all the group performers and good luck on your upcoming individual events!
