Students Find a Home in Art Club

The Art Club is becoming an increasingly popular activity at MCHS, with different students showing up to every meeting. Rylee Trustin, a freshman, was one of the new faces at Art Club this year, along with a large number of other freshmen. “It’s got art, and new people, cool people, cool people that like art,” she said, when asked why she joined. Her friends chuckled at the statement. Nathan Farland, another freshman said he joined, “because people always say I’m good at art, and I figured art was fun for me.” Nathan says he “hopes to get better in different styles of art” in this year of Art Club.

A big part of fall in Art Club is preparing for Homecoming, just as it is for the whole school. Maggie Van Steenhuyse, a sophomore, was asked about her Homecoming project, which was painting game board posters for the dance hallway. She was asked if she was enjoying the project, and laughed, saying “I don’t know, it’s sort of a rushed thing,” and “you just sort of get right into it.” “It’s going fine, it needs touch ups, but it’s going.”

The advisor for Art Club is Mrs. Lori Pedersen, the school’s art teacher. She started supervising the club when she began teaching at MCHS eight years ago. When questioned about what she wants to do with the club that they haven’t done before, she thought for a moment, saying “It really depends on what the students want to do.” “We’re doing decorations for homecoming, for the dance,” she said. Her favorite part of the art club is the students. “It’s kids who want to be here,” she said. Art Club’s president is sophomore Baylea Starkey. As the president she “makes sure everything goes smoothly, In her words, “there’s really not much hierarchy.”

The art club meets on Thursdays, at least twice a month, from right after school to 4:30. For more information, contact Mrs. Pedersen in Room 1329.
