Individual Speech Participants Prepare for State

February means one thing for MCHS Speech participants: Individual Contest. On February 3rd, the MCHS Speech team attended the District contest at Clear Lake High School. The Mohawks poured their hearts out for the opportunity to be apart of the state contest in Arlington. With the anticipation of weather, the contest was sped up to account for other schools and their travels home. Scoring mix ups resulted in participants not getting official scores until later that day instead of waiting an hour or two. Events receive a score of 1-4. A score of 1 means the participant advances to state. Scores go down from there, with a score of 4 meaning an event is disqualified.

Daniel Stephenson, a sophomore, is working hard to prepare for the State Contest this Saturday.  “This is my second year in speech. It was pretty stressful especially because I hadn’t prepared as much as I should’ve but it was also a lot of fun and it was great to have so many of my friends there to support me. I’m also making sure I practice with Mrs. Alexander so I’m prepared. I’m doing research for my topics on spontaneous, and I’m rehearsing my poetry piece and trying to make sure I really capture all the emotion behind it so I can hopefully go to All State.” Good luck to the Mohawks as they attend state contest at Starmont High School in Arlington, March 10th!
