Art Students Showcase Talent

Art kids rejoice! The annual CIML Art Show happened recently, on Wednesday, April 5th at Ames High School. Students selected include Anna Godfrey, Emma Davison, Grace Sanchez-Gannett, Brianna Sullivan, Chloe Cheney, Eden Lewerke, Reigan Homan, Nathan Hanna, Peyton Carpenter, Riley Theobald, Emily Balluff, Neeley Swann, Carley Paulsen, Morgan Lupkis, Brianna Sullivan, Kyra Kinseth, Mikayla Ferch, Odeleine Daugherty, Eliott Bowers, Haley Davis, Kaitlyn Cox, Maya Jalukar, and Gabrielle Jimenez.

Students used all kinds of materials, from charcoal and graphite to ceramics, oil, acrylic, watercolor, and tempera paints, ink pens, colored pencils, and more. Many students earned Blue Merits, Honorable Mentions, and two students won Best of Show. Honorable Mentions include Eden Lewerke, Riley Theobald, Eliott Bowers, Kyra Kinseth, Emily Balluff, Morgan Lupkis, and  Emma Davison. Blue Merits include Haley Davis and Riley Theobald. Maya Jalukar brought home best of show for ninth graders in the two-dimensional category, and Grace Sanchez-Gannet won best of show in the two-dimensional category overall.

Seniors Grace Sanchez-Gannet and Riley Theobald have been selected for this art show for many years. Sanchez-Gannet had a painting of a rabbit and a self-portrait, while Theobald had a colored pencil piece, a pastel piece, and an ink piece. Both have participated in the art program at MCHS for all four years of their high school careers. Sanchez-Gannet prefers paints, while Theobald enjoys drawing.

Many students, including Sanchez-Gannet and Theobald, enjoy seeing other students’ work. This year, art students were able to tour the College of Design at Iowa State, seeing classrooms and studios, along with an art tour. Both seniors are interested in arts in the future, with possibilities of minoring or majoring. They recommend art to all kinds of students, as it’s not so much a class, it’s more of a break in the day, to relax and create something.

Congratulations to all students who were selected!
